Missing: A Member of the Family

Coming from a society where human rights is a major challenge, it was indeed both shocking and surprising to read a flyer posted on the streets of Chula Vista, a city in California, United States of America, about a missing dog. More shocking was the reference to the missing dog as A member of the family. The other part of the flyer went on to describe the weight, colour, and other features of the dog, and there was a photograph of the dog! There was also a phone number to call, as well as a contact address, in case someone saw the dog.

Sometime later, I saw another poster, this time, of a cat! The poster was essentially the same as the first one I had seen before. It had the caption; Missing: A Member of the Family; the details of the cat, its weight and features, a photograph, as well as the contact address of the owner were listed to help locate and return the missing cat to its owner.

I began to make fun within me about how Americans were showing so much concern for an animal (pet) that was lost. Because, in Nigeria, such a pet may have been knocked down by a car somewhere, and other cars would have driven over its carcase in the streets, until it is as flat as the road surface; or worse, it could end up in someones cooking pot, as a delicacy, enroute anothers stomach.

As this joke was going on in my mind, the Spirit of God began to communicate with me on how God does the very same things for man and even more. God sends missionaries at the risk of their lives, to go all over the world and seek out the lost and direct them back home to Himself.

He said to me that just like a missing dog cannot read the posters pasted all over the community, people who are lost (that is, people who are separated from God) are unable to comprehend the flyers that God has sent out on them. So that if a dog were to see a poster stating that its owner was looking for it, it cannot read the poster; neither can it identify itself in the photograph, nor can it do anything about it. In much the same way, people who are lost cannot comprehend the love of God for them; neither can they believe that God has a poster out on them, with their identification details included in it. The truth is God has a poster out on man, and has had, for over three thousand years now; it is the bible!

In the bible, there is a poster of all men with the caption: MISSING: A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY! There is also a description and picture of the man that is lost. And these are some of the descriptions God has made of the missing members of His family: He describes them as, Anyone who is living apart from Christ. Anyone who is excluded from the citizenship of heaven; and who does not know the covenant promises God had made to His people. Anyone who is living in this world, without God and without hope. Anyone who is far away from God. (Ephesians 2:12-13) In another place the poster says, Gods missing family members are, those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or is a prostitute, or practice homosexuality, or is a thief, or a greedy person, or a drunkard, or is abusive, or cheats people, or is involved in the occult. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Missing members of Gods family are people of different nationalities, cultures, tongues, and tribes. They are White, Black, Hispanic, Indian, Chinese, etc. They are politicians, police officers, diplomats, prostitutes, Hollywood stars, drug traffickers, drug addicts, murderers, bankers, religious leaders, founders of religious orders, armed robbers, etc. They are wealthy, middle-class, poor, employees, employers, unemployed, students, etc. They are the aged, the middle aged, adolescents, teenagers, kindergartens, etc. In summary, the lost member of Gods family is anyone and everyone who is yet to hear about what Jesus Christ did for mankind in dying on the cross; or who has heard about what Jesus Christ did, but has yet to receive Him as Lord and personal Saviour. Indeed if you are listening to this broadcast, and you dont understand much of what is being said now, it is very likely that you are one of those whom God has asked that we tell that He is waiting for you to come to Him.

But since the lost man cannot comprehend what has been written about him in the bible, God has sent messengers (people who were themselves once lost, and are now found and saved), to go everywhere and use every avenue possible to let those who are lost know that He is looking for them, and that they are considered members of His family! In the bible, there are statements that tell the lost that Gods forgiveness is awaiting them; for example, I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. (Hebrews 8:12; KJV); and, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28; KJV) Other messages on the poster that God has sent out read: Come now, and let us reason together, though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword (Isaiah 1:18-20; KJV), and I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins. (Isaiah 43:25; KJV).

There was once a young man who left home on his own volition to pursue a life of absolute freedom. Not too long after he embarked on his quest, he ran out of money, and to make ends meet, he picked up a job which paid pittance. One day, after he was reduced to wanting to eat pig feed, he thought of home, and realized that his father treated his servants far better than he was being treated where he had run to; so he decided to return home and ask for his fathers forgiveness and to request to be treated as one of his fathers servants. But while he was a long way from home, his father, who had over the years been looking forward to receiving his lost son back home, sighted him afar off, and immediately gave instructions to his servants to prepare for a celebration. He then ran off to welcome his lost son home, for he said, This son of mine was dead, but now, he is alive! When he got to his son, the young man gave his rehearsed speech of repentance and entreaty to be down-graded to the position of a servant; but his father told him that he was still very much regarded as a son and a member of the family, and that a celebration was already being prepared for him.

As seemingly unforgiveable as it is to have lived a life of rebellion and sinfulness, God is still waiting to welcome you home. Anyone who has no personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ is lost and dead; but when that individual comes to God and enters into such a personal relationship, that individual suddenly comes alive. He or she will receive joy, eternal life in Christ, and a meaning in life. The past life of sin, sorrow, shame, and self-inflicted injuries are wiped off and a new life of righteousness, joy, celebration, and divine wholeness is given in exchange. You can receive this new life today, and indeed, right now, if you would come to God, through Jesus Christ! No matter how horrible a life you may have lived. Jesus will take that horrible life and wash it in His precious blood (shed for the remission of sin on the cross at Calvary) and clean you up every wit. Indeed some who were once lost, have been found and cleansed. They have been made holy; and have been made right with God as they called on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11). God has also united many with Christ Jesus. Those who once were far away from God, have now been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. For Christ himself has brought peace to them. He has united everyone who has accepted Him as their Lord and Saviour, regardless of who they are, into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us from God. (Ephesians 2:13-14; NLT)

Friend, it is time to come home to God. He loves and cares for your wellbeing, He has sent out His word to you through this broadcast, to come home, because you are a member of His family; and, you are greatly missed! What a privilege it is to belong to the family of God! Why not call on the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ even this moment, asking Him to have mercy on you, and save you from the destruction that is to come, and, the pestilence that flies in the day. He said, All who call on me shall not be disappointed! The ball is in your court!

Let us pray!
